Chapter Fifteen

I’M STUCK in that moment where you know everything that’s coming out of your mouth is wrong, but you can’t help yourself, because it’s like you’re outside your body looking in. Yeah, that moment. The one you’re afraid you might regret. But either way, I’ll have regrets. Either for doing this or not doing this. It’s a no-win. But that appears to be my life when it comes to this woman.

I want her. I crave her in a way I’m not completely comfortable with, nor do I understand. But what’s worse? She wants me in return. And that’s what drives me wild. Makes me rock-hard and ultimately buggered. I think about her. I fantasize about her. I daydream about her. I obsess about her. And now, I’m desperate to get her into my bed.

She’s eyeing me hard. Like her trust for the male gender resides in the bottom of her feet. Like I turned her on, but she still wants to slap me for my naughty words and tempting offer. I’ve jumbled her up, so I suppose that makes us even.

Even though I had come to all of those startling conclusions this evening, I was still holding off, wondering if I was wrong. Wondering if I was being hasty and allowing my dick to run the show for me. So, I came and sat at the bar and tried not to notice her. Clearly, that didn’t work out so well for me, because I allowed my overwhelming jealousy—over one dance, might I add—to force me to corner her into a hallway and lay my cards on the table. To explicitly explain how I want to fuck her. To promise her that I won’t disappear after I have my wicked, wanton way with her.

But I didn’t lie to her.

I don’t care about right or wrong or work or any other prat. Halle and I are a mutual mess. But the future? That’s the one promise I can’t make. Then again, that wasn’t something she was too interested in exploring, either.

“What happens when Oliver no longer cares, Jonah? What happens when he takes home the nurse he’s grinding against?”

“I won’t notice. I’ll have already taken you home.”

“And tomorrow?” she challenges, tilting her head and meeting me word for word. Promise for promise. She doesn’t believe me. And who can blame her? I left her that morning before she even woke. I tell her I don’t date or sleep with my staff only to beg her for a fling after one drink, one wrong dance and a sad story in my office. And if life were that simple and easy, I wouldn’t be back here. But it’s not. Because as I said before, I can’t stop thinking about her.

I. Cannot. Stop. Thinking. About. Her.

Time seems to hold no bearing on that. No domain. Time could give a toss. Maybe people really do walk into each other’s lives at the right moment. Maybe there is a purpose and a meaning to the universe.
